Our Family Unit Approach

Why Choose the Family Unit Approach?
We recognise that supporting a child through recovery can be overwhelming. Parents often feel helpless, unsure of how to provide reassurance or what steps to take next.
Our programme offers gentle but structured interventions that complement existing family support, helping children develop the emotional tools they need to navigate their experiences.
By engaging in positive activities alongside trained facilitators, children can explore their emotions in a constructive and healthy way, reducing feelings of anxiety, frustration, or isolation. This programme is designed to work alongside parents and caregivers, rather than replacing the family’s role in their child’s recovery.
Our approach is particularly valuable for families who:
- Are currently supporting children through the emotional effects of trauma
- Wish to strengthen communication and understanding within the family
- Want to ensure children receive guidance and reassurance during school holidays
- Are looking for structured but welcoming wellbeing activities that feel accessible and inclusive.
Our Family Unit Approach
At Honour Thy Woman Group, we understand that recovery from domestic abuse does not happen in isolation. The effects of trauma reach beyond the individual, impacting relationships, family dynamics, and emotional wellbeing.
Our Family Unit Approach is designed to support mothers and their children aged 7–17 ensuring they receive the guidance, reassurance, and structured support they need to navigate their emotions.
This programme is centred on the belief that healing is most effective when the whole family is involved in the process. Through carefully designed wellbeing activities, we offer young people a safe space to express themselves, build resilience, and process their experiences in a healthy, constructive way.

How Our CYP Holistic Programmes Work
Our sessions prioritise emotional recovery, positive connection, and creative expression. We aim to foster environments where mothers and their children feel safe, valued, and empowered, allowing them to explore their thoughts and feelings without fear or judgment. Each session is designed to provide a balance between guided therapeutic activities and gentle, informal engagement, ensuring that children feel comfortable while developing meaningful coping strategies.
Our trained consultants lead sessions in Gloucester, Forest of Dean & Cheltenham, ensuring accessibility for families in their districts..
Each session with our consultants is carefully designed to:
- Encourage positive emotional expression through creativity and guided discussion
- Help children build resilience by offering tools to manage difficult thoughts and feelings
- Strengthen family bonds by reinforcing the importance of support within the home environment
- Provide a safe and understanding space where children feel heard and respected
A Holistic Approach to Wellbeing
We know that wellbeing is deeply personal, and no two children experience recovery in exactly the same way. That’s why our programme offers a varied and flexible approach, incorporating activities that encourage emotional expression through art, movement, storytelling.
Our Family Facilitators have put together some great activities suitable for different age groups and families to do together.
Our Young People Wellbeing Programme will run exclusively during half-term and school holidays, recognising that these periods can be particularly challenging for children who are processing trauma or navigating difficult emotions.
